A daily oral hygiene routine is a good habit to get into. While there is no substitute for brushing your teeth and flossing, including a mouthwash to your morning ritual is a welcome addition to the dental battle.
The fight against tooth decay is about getting into those cracks and crannies, but reaching the problem places where bacteria hide is always difficult. Mouthwash can help:
-Control bad breath
-Keep tooth decay at bay
-Keep tartar from forming
Even those valiant persons who floss every day can benefit from rinsing with a mouthwash that includes ingredients that kill bacteria.
When you shop for an over-the-counter mouthwash, check the label to be sure you get one that contains fluoride and can help reduce plaque, gingivitis, and cavities as well as bad breath. There are cosmetic mouthwashes that bestow fresh breath but do nothing for your dental health. So, be sure to select a mouth rinse that proudly displays the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. This ensures that it has undergone testing to be safe and effective for your dental health.
Dental note: Swallowing large amounts of mouthwash can cause nausea, vomiting and in some products intoxication due to alcohol. For this reason, we do not recommend mouthwash for children any younger than 6-years-old. Check the label for specific warnings.
