Everyone gets a sweet tooth now and then. There are plenty of ways to enjoy healthy eating, but to be honest, sometimes you just want something sweet. But just because you have a craving, you don’t have to put yourself at risk for cavities. Instead of reaching for candy or a sugary dessert, quiet that craving with sugarless gum. Chewing sugarless gum does more than tame that urge for something sweet. It actually helps you maintain a healthy mouth, and can prevent cavities.

Saliva is something that people usually don’t want to talk about, and that is understandable. But saliva is vitally important for maintaining a healthy mouth. Saliva will help to wash away the food debris and bacteria that accumulate in your mouth after you eat, and it fights the effects of the acids left over from your meal or snack. If you regularly drink fluoridated water, your saliva will use trace amounts of that fluoride to strengthen your tooth enamel. Strong enamel is key in fighting cavities.

For the best possible results, you should chew a stick of sugarless gum for 20 minutes after a meal or a snack. When selecting your gum, look for the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance. While chewing sugarless gum will benefit your teeth and mouth, it is not a replacement for brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and seeing your dentist for routine checkups
