If our dentists, Dr. Michael Wiesner, Dr. Thuy Wiesner, and Dr. B. Matt Hollis recommended dentures for your smile to replace missing teeth, it is important to know how best to take care of them. Denture care requires diligence so that they serve you well and look their best.

At A Brighter Smile Dental Care, whether you have custom-crafted complete dentures or partial dentures, smile care is just as vital as with your natural pearly whites. Today we are sharing some denture care tips with you to maintain your beautiful smile:

Rinsing: Always take off your dentures after eating to rinse food particles and any oral debris around them. It helps to lay down a hand towel to keep them safe from being dropped, or put some water in the sink. You will want to be gentle with your dentures when handling them so that nothing is bent or damaged.

Cleaning Teeth and Gums: If you still have natural teeth you will want to brush them with a soft-bristled brush. You also can clean the soft tissues in the mouth with this toothbrush or gauze. Be sure to clean all areas of your smile, including the roof, tongue, and cheeks.

Cleaning Dentures: To clean your dentures properly, brush them with a soft toothbrush once a day and soak them in a nonabrasive denture cleaner. You want to clear them of food, plaque, and any oral debris. Also, brush the grooves to remove any denture adhesive.

Soaking Dentures: When your dentures are not in your mouth you will need to keep them moist. You may soak them overnight in warm or cold—never hot—water or even a mild solution specifically for dentures. Always follow the instructions provided by the packaging when using these cleaning solutions. Before putting dentures which have soaked overnight back into your mouth, rinse them thoroughly to remove any denture solution residue.

Checkups: Always check with our dentists if you have any concerns about your dentures and be sure to keep current with regularly scheduled checkups. Our dentists will make sure that your dentures fit well to avoid slipping or discomfort when you wear them. They can make sure your dentures aren’t loose as this can irritate your gums and other oral tissue.
